frequently asked questions
clay tempering is a traditional japanese technique. the smith coats the blade in clay before quenching โ thin on the edge, thick on the spine. when quenched, the edge cools fast (gets hard) and the spine cools slow (stays flexible). this creates the hamon (temper line) and makes a blade thatโs both hard and flexible.
yes. itโs formed naturally during the clay-tempering process. itโs not etched, not laser-engraved, not fake. each blade has a unique hamon pattern โ like a fingerprint.
a katana is a long sword (typically 60-73 cm blade), a wakizashi is a short sword (typically 30-60 cm blade). wakizashi were often worn together with katana by samurai โ the short one for close combat and indoor use. this wakizashi has a 52 cm blade, making it a compact but fully functional japanese short sword.
yes. the tang (nakago) runs the full length of the handle. this is the traditional and safest construction for a functional sword.
this is a collector-grade sword. it can cut, but we recommend it for display, collection, and light practice (suburi, iaido kata). if you want to do tameshigiri (target cutting), contact us about swords made specifically for that.
itโs pure copper with a round shape. the surface has a wave and cloud pattern (wave cloud tsuba) with gold and silver plating โ the silver waves and gold clouds catch the light differently. itโs exclusive to ab sword and not available from other makers.
itโs jade green lacquer with a nashiji (gold speckle) finish. small gold flecks are scattered across the green lacquer surface โ like gold dust on a jade stone. each saya has a unique pattern. the lacquer is smooth, glossy, and durable.
sword laws vary. in many places, ornamental (blunt) swords are legal, but sharpened blades may be restricted. check your local laws before ordering. we ship as a collectible item. contact us if you need the blade blunted for legal reasons.
wipe it with a soft dry cloth after handling. oil it every few weeks with choji oil (or gun oil / mineral oil). donโt touch the blade with bare hands โ finger oils cause rust. store it in a cool, dry place away from humidity.
yes. every sword comes with a certificate of authenticity from ab sword. it describes the materials and construction. as a handmade item, minor variations in hamon and hada are normal โ thatโs how you know itโs hand-forged.
