real japanese t10 steel wakizashi clay-tempered hand-forged Japanese Short Sword

clay tempered real hamon 60 hrc edge full tang 18-step mirror polish pure copper tsuba nashiji lacquer saya certificate included

this wakizashi is hand-forged from t10 high carbon steel using traditional clay-tempering (tsuchioki). the blade has a real hamon โ€” naturally formed during quenching, not etched or fake. edge hardness is 60ยฐ hrc. the spine stays flexible. we polished this blade through 18 steps using traditional jizuya (uchigumori) mirror polish technique. the steel shows a silver-white surface with visible hada (forge grain). the hamon is clear and three-dimensional.

blade

t10 high carbon steel, hand-forged using traditional methods. clay-tempering (tsuchioki) process. real hamon โ€” naturally formed, not etched, not fake. edge hardness: 60ยฐ hrc. spine stays flexible. 18-step jizuya hand polish, mirror finish. visible hada (forge grain). the blade is compact at 52 cm โ€” a proper wakizashi length for iaido and close-quarters practice.

tsuba (handguard)

the tsuba is the centerpiece of this wakizashi. pure copper, round shape. the surface has a wave and cloud (wave cloud tsuba) pattern โ€” wave surges and cloud scrolls rendered in relief. it has gold and silver plating: silver for the waves, gold for the clouds. the antique copper base makes both colors pop. this dual-plating design is exclusive to ab sword.

habaki (collar)

zinc alloy with gold finish. square shape with floral relief pattern. creates a clean transition between the blade and tsuba. secure fit prevents blade movement in the saya.

tsuka (handle)

23 cm long. solid wood core. wrapped in white same-gawa (shark skin) โ€” authentic, not synthetic. black cotton ito in hineri-maki (diamond wrap) style. lake blue ito contrasts with the white shark skin โ€” clean, cool look that pairs with the jade green saya. gold menuki sit under the wrap. the kashira (pommel) is zinc alloy in a deep antique copper tone with concentric water ripple relief. double mekugi (bamboo pins) secure the handle.

saya (scabbard)

solid wood with jade green lacquer. the finish is nashiji (gold speckle) โ€” small gold flecks scattered across the green lacquer, like gold dust on a jade stone. each saya is unique. the sageo is lake blue braided cord, hand-tied.

construction

full tang (full length nakago). the tang runs the full length of the handle. this wakizashi has a compact 52 cm blade โ€” short enough for indoor practice, long enough to be a serious blade. traditional and safest construction for a functional sword.

frequently asked questions

what does clay-tempered mean?

clay tempering is a traditional japanese technique. the smith coats the blade in clay before quenching โ€” thin on the edge, thick on the spine. when quenched, the edge cools fast (gets hard) and the spine cools slow (stays flexible). this creates the hamon (temper line) and makes a blade thatโ€™s both hard and flexible.

is the hamon real?

yes. itโ€™s formed naturally during the clay-tempering process. itโ€™s not etched, not laser-engraved, not fake. each blade has a unique hamon pattern โ€” like a fingerprint.

what is the difference between a katana and a wakizashi?

a katana is a long sword (typically 60-73 cm blade), a wakizashi is a short sword (typically 30-60 cm blade). wakizashi were often worn together with katana by samurai โ€” the short one for close combat and indoor use. this wakizashi has a 52 cm blade, making it a compact but fully functional japanese short sword.

is this sword full tang?

yes. the tang (nakago) runs the full length of the handle. this is the traditional and safest construction for a functional sword.

can i cut with this wakizashi?

this is a collector-grade sword. it can cut, but we recommend it for display, collection, and light practice (suburi, iaido kata). if you want to do tameshigiri (target cutting), contact us about swords made specifically for that.

whatโ€™s special about the tsuba?

itโ€™s pure copper with a round shape. the surface has a wave and cloud pattern (wave cloud tsuba) with gold and silver plating โ€” the silver waves and gold clouds catch the light differently. itโ€™s exclusive to ab sword and not available from other makers.

what is the saya finish?

itโ€™s jade green lacquer with a nashiji (gold speckle) finish. small gold flecks are scattered across the green lacquer surface โ€” like gold dust on a jade stone. each saya has a unique pattern. the lacquer is smooth, glossy, and durable.

is this legal in my country?

sword laws vary. in many places, ornamental (blunt) swords are legal, but sharpened blades may be restricted. check your local laws before ordering. we ship as a collectible item. contact us if you need the blade blunted for legal reasons.

how do i care for the blade?

wipe it with a soft dry cloth after handling. oil it every few weeks with choji oil (or gun oil / mineral oil). donโ€™t touch the blade with bare hands โ€” finger oils cause rust. store it in a cool, dry place away from humidity.

does it come with a certificate?

yes. every sword comes with a certificate of authenticity from ab sword. it describes the materials and construction. as a handmade item, minor variations in hamon and hada are normal โ€” thatโ€™s how you know itโ€™s hand-forged.
