handcrafted full tang damascus steel ninjato sword
this ninjato is hand-forged from high carbon steel, folded 13 times to produce 8196 visible layers. the wavy grain pattern on the blade is real โ it comes from the folding process, not from etching or stamping. the whole blade is oil-quenched for hardness and toughness.
after forging, the blade goes through a 12-step hand polish. the surface comes out mirror-bright. long hi (grooves) run down both sides โ they cut weight and add a whistle when you swing it. at 27.7 inches, the blade is long enough to be practical but short enough for indoor handling.
blade
damascus steel โ high carbon steel folded 13 times (8196 layers). the layered grain pattern is visible across the entire blade surface. oil-quenched for through-hardening. 12-step hand polish to a mirror finish. long hi (fuller grooves) on both sides. straight blade profile โ traditional ninjato style.
tsuba (guard)

frequently asked questions
damascus steel is made by folding high carbon steel multiple times during forging. this ninjatoโs blade is folded 13 times, creating 8196 layers. the layers show up as a wavy grain pattern on the blade โ no two blades look the same.
yes. the blade starts as high carbon steel that gets folded 13 times (2 to the 13th power = 8196). you can see the layered pattern with your eyes. itโs the real thing, not a surface etching.
oil tempering is a heat treatment method. the blade is heated and then quenched in oil instead of water. oil cools the steel more slowly, which reduces the risk of cracking and produces a tough blade that holds an edge well.
the hi is a long groove running down each side of the blade. it does two things: reduces weight (important for a 27.7-inch blade) and makes a whistling sound when you swing it fast. some people also say it helps with balance.
yes. the tang runs the full length of the handle. itโs secured by two bamboo mekugi pins. you can disassemble the sword for maintenance โ pull the pins and the handle comes off.
yes, this is a functional sword. the damascus steel blade is oil-tempered and sharp. it can handle light cutting (tatami mats, water bottles, etc.). if you plan to do heavy tameshigiri regularly, keep the blade oiled and check the mekugi pins after each session.
a ninjato is traditionally straight (or nearly straight), while a katana has a curved blade. ninjato were associated with ninja โ shorter, straighter, easier to carry and use indoors. this one has a straight blade profile, 27.7-inch length, and a black iron tsuba.
sword laws vary by country and region. check your local laws before ordering. we ship this as a collectible / martial arts item. contact us if you need the blade blunted for legal compliance.
wipe it dry after every use. oil it every 2-3 weeks with mineral oil, choji oil, or gun oil. donโt use abrasive cleaners on the blade โ theyโll damage the layered pattern. store it in the saya in a dry place. humidity is the enemy.
yes. every ninjato comes with a free sword bag for storage and transport. the bag fits the saya.
